What makes this useful: A sourced EarnThread field guide written for creators turning attention into an owned business.
X has shut Creator Revenue Sharing and replaced it with a new programme, X Original Content Rewards. New enrolments in the old programme ended on 7 August 2026 and it closed on 7 September 2026, according to X's Creator Revenue Sharing help page (opens in a new tab). To keep earning from impressions you now have to apply to Original Content Rewards. It has a lower impressions bar, stricter rules on what counts as original, and the same pay schedule: every two weeks. Every date and term below comes from X's own help centre, as published in October 2026.
The short version for small creators: the new programme is easier to qualify for than the old one, but you still need a paid X subscription and half a million qualifying impressions every 90 days. X can also change or cancel it at any time. Treat it as a bonus on top of income you control, not as the plan.
Key takeaways
- X stopped new Creator Revenue Sharing enrolments on 7 August 2026 and retired the programme on 7 September 2026.
- Original Content Rewards needs a paid X subscription, 500 verified followers and 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in 90 days.
- Payouts are every two weeks with a $30 minimum, based on unique Premium-user impressions on the Home Timeline.
- Copied, lightly edited, aggregated and cross-platform reposted content earns nothing, and neither does content only about monetisation.
- X can change or cancel the programme at any time, so put your own offer and email sign-up under your best posts.
What happened to Creator Revenue Sharing, date by date
X set out the wind-down on both its Creator Revenue Sharing page (opens in a new tab) and its Original Content Rewards page (opens in a new tab).
| Date (2026) | What happened |
|---|---|
| 7 August | X stopped accepting new enrolments into Creator Revenue Sharing |
| 14 August | First of three final payouts for enrolled creators (standard schedule) |
| 28 August | Second final payout (standard schedule) |
| 7 September | Last day of earning under Creator Revenue Sharing; programme retired |
| 8 September | X began rolling out applications to Original Content Rewards for existing Revenue Sharing members |
| On or around 11 September | Final payout for earnings accrued up to 7 September |
Being in the old programme doesn't move you across. Former members still have to meet the new eligibility rules and apply. X says you can check your status under Creator Studio → Original Content Rewards. If you've already done ID verification and connected a payout method, you won't need to do those steps again. Accounts whose monetisation is paused for a past policy violation can't enrol for now.
X Original Content Rewards eligibility: old rules vs new rules
The biggest change is the impressions threshold. Under Creator Revenue Sharing, X's page lists "at least 5M organic impressions within the last 3 months". Original Content Rewards asks for 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days. Impressions on replies don't count.
| Requirement | Creator Revenue Sharing (closed) | Original Content Rewards (current) |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription | Premium, Premium Business or Premium Organizations | Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business, or a Plus, Premium, Super or Ultra plan on The X Subscription |
| Impressions | 5M organic impressions in the last 3 months | 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, replies excluded |
| Followers | 500 verified followers | 500 verified followers |
| Age | Not listed on the page | 18 or over |
| Location | Supported country | A country where the programme is available (Ireland, the UK and the US are all on the list) |
| Account type | Not listed | Personal or Business account; political and government organisations are excluded |
| Content | Compliant with the User Agreement | Actively posting original content as X defines it |

Meeting the criteria doesn't guarantee a place. You submit an application, X reviews it, and you get one appeal if you're turned down. If the appeal fails, you can reapply after 42 days, as long as you still qualify.
Once you're in, you have to keep qualifying. That means keeping a paid subscription, posting original content, and steering clear of bots, engagement tampering and false statements. X also bans "soliciting engagements". It defines that as repeatedly telling people to like, reply, bookmark, follow or repost. Small accounts often lean on those calls to action, so look at your posting habits before you apply.
What X counts as original content
This part of the rules decides whether your impressions count at all. X defines original content as content you personally wrote, filmed, designed or produced that reflects your own voice, perspective or expertise. Commentary counts. X says that reacting to, analysing or adding context to the news is "a legitimate and valued form of original expression."
The Original Content Rewards page (opens in a new tab) names four kinds of content that don't qualify:
- Copied content. Text, images or video taken wholesale from someone else, including anything downloaded from X or another platform and re-uploaded.
- Minimally modified content. Someone else's work with a word or two changed, a filter added, the speed adjusted or a text overlay dropped on top.
- Aggregated content. Compilations of other people's posts, clips or images with no substantial new perspective.
- Cross-platform reposts. Content lifted from another platform and posted by someone other than its creator.
Content is also ineligible if it carries a helpful Community Note, was made or posted by automated means, contains misleading information, or is "exclusively focused on monetization coaching, monetization discussion, or maximizing payouts." That last rule matters if your niche is creator income: posts that are only about how to earn on X won't generate qualified impressions.
Qualifying as original under this programme doesn't protect you from X's intellectual property rules. Those are separate. You still need the rights to anything you use that someone else made.
How Original Content Rewards payouts work
You're paid on qualified impressions. X defines these as unique impressions from Premium users (Premium Basic, Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business) on the Home Timeline feed, where at least 50% of the post is visible. Repeat impressions from the same account on the same post don't count. Nor do paid, promoted, artificially generated or fraudulent impressions.
So the people who pay you are a subset of your audience: subscribers, scrolling the Home Timeline, who actually see most of your post. Your non-Premium followers can read and share your work, but their views aren't part of the payout.
X's page gives the payout mechanics:
- Frequency: every two weeks, as long as your account and content keep meeting the requirements.
- Minimum payout: $30.
- US creators: paid through X Money. You need an active X Money account, and each person can have only one, tied to their Social Security Number.
- Creators outside the US (including Ireland and the UK): connect a Stripe payout account and complete identity verification through Stripe.
X doesn't publish a rate per impression on these pages, and we haven't seen one from X, so this guide doesn't estimate one. If you see a per-1,000-impression figure online, check where it came from before you plan around it. For the rates YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Twitch do share, see what every platform pays creators in 2026.
X also lists a specific suspension rule: from 3 March 2026, anyone who posts AI-generated video of an armed conflict without saying it was made with AI is suspended from the programme for 90 days. A repeat violation means a permanent suspension of payments.
What the change means for small accounts
On paper, small accounts gain. The old bar was 5 million organic impressions in three months. The new one is 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in 90 days, a tenth of the old number, though measured more narrowly. The 500 verified followers requirement hasn't changed.
The hurdles that remain are the ones small creators feel most:
- 01You pay first
Every route in needs a paid X subscription, so you start each month out of pocket.
- 02Your audience has to be the right audience
Only verified users' impressions count towards eligibility, and only Premium users' Home Timeline impressions count towards pay. A following made up mostly of non-subscribers won't get you far.
- 03The rules sit with X
Both help pages say X "may modify or cancel" the programme at any time, "in its sole discretion". Creator Revenue Sharing went from no new enrolments to closed in one month.
That third point is the main lesson. A creator who relied on Revenue Sharing had four weeks between the enrolment freeze and the last day of earning. Then they had to reapply under new rules, with no guarantee of getting in.
Subscriptions: the X income with a different deal
X runs a separate product, Subscriptions, where followers pay you monthly for exclusive posts, subscriber-only Spaces, subscriber-only replies and a badge. The economics are different. According to X's Subscriptions help page (opens in a new tab), creators "are eligible to earn up to ~97% of the gross revenue" and X "does not take a revenue share". The deductions are third-party payment processing or app store fees, plus cancellations and refunds.
You choose the monthly price from a set of price points. X doesn't offer free trials. Subscribers buy from X, so you never see their payment details. X says creators anywhere who meet its eligibility requirements can apply, and Ireland, the UK and the US are all on its list of territories.
Subscriptions pay you for a relationship, not for impressions, which makes them steadier. They still live inside X, though. Your subscriber list, prices and access all depend on X's rules and X's app. If you want people who pay you to stay reachable whatever X decides, take the relationship somewhere you own. A good start is getting followers onto an email list.
Where X's pay fits in a creator business
Impression pay rewards reach, and reach is the thing a platform can change overnight, which is why platform payouts aren't enough on their own. The income that survives a policy change is income from offers you sell yourself, to people whose contact details you hold:
- A low-priced digital product that turns your expertise into something people can buy today. Start with how to choose your first digital product and how to price it.
- A lead magnet that swaps a useful free resource for an email address, so your best X readers become contacts you can reach. See how to create a lead magnet that builds an owned audience.
- A paid call or membership for the readers who want more than posts. Our guide to the ways creators make money shows how the steps connect.
EarnThread is built for exactly this. You get a mobile storefront for your X bio link, downloads, bookings and memberships, an audience CRM with consent records, and attribution that shows which post led to a sale. Payments go straight into your own Stripe account. The Launch plan costs $0 a month with a 5% platform fee and needs no card, so you can have an offer live before your next Original Content Rewards payout lands. Start free, or compare plans on the pricing section.
If you qualify for Original Content Rewards, apply. Then put a link to something you sell, or a free resource that collects emails, under your best-performing posts. That way the reach X rewards also builds a business X can't switch off.
Frequently asked questions
Is X Creator Revenue Sharing still available?
No. X stopped accepting new enrolments on 7 August 2026 and retired the programme on 7 September 2026. Enrolled creators kept earning until 7 September and received a final payout on or around 11 September. To keep earning from impressions you now need to apply to Original Content Rewards and meet its separate eligibility rules.
What are the X Original Content Rewards eligibility requirements?
You must be 18 or over, live in a supported country, hold a Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription (or an eligible X Subscription plan), have 500 verified followers and have 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, excluding replies. You also need to post original content and be in good standing.
How often does X pay creators under Original Content Rewards?
X says payouts are processed every two weeks, with a $30 minimum. US creators are paid through X Money. Creators elsewhere, including in Ireland and the UK, connect a Stripe payout account and complete identity verification with Stripe. Earnings are based on qualified impressions from Premium users on the Home Timeline.
Do I have to reapply if I was in Creator Revenue Sharing?
Yes. From 8 September 2026 X began letting existing Revenue Sharing members apply to Original Content Rewards, but you must meet the new eligibility rules and be approved. If you've already completed ID verification and connected a payout method, you don't need to repeat those steps.
How much do X Subscriptions pay creators?
X's Subscriptions help page says creators can earn up to about 97% of gross Subscriptions revenue and that X takes no revenue share. The deductions are third-party payment processing or app store fees, plus cancellations and refunds. You choose a monthly price from X's set price points.
